Q&A: Jess Curtis

Launceston’s active vibe, thriving food scene and excellent coffee were enough to lure a keen traveller back to her home roots.

Jess Curtis

You grew up in Launceston, and live and work there now. Did you always think you would stick around?

I’ve always had a passion for travel and experiencing new places, so I wasn’t sure that I’d stay in Launceston. It wasn’t until my first trip overseas that I truly appreciated what Tasmania has to offer. Coming back, I realised how much I love the lifestyle here - the slower pace, and the balance between nature and community. Launceston has such an active and welcoming vibe, with people out walking, running and grabbing their morning coffee - it’s a great place for the kind of lifestyle I want to pursue.

You’re a Nutritionist and Pilates instructor. What led you down this career path?

Health, wellbeing and helping others to feel their best have always been passion areas for me. Studying nutrition opened my eyes to the power of food - not just for physical health, but also for longevity and mental wellbeing. After I finished university, I realised that movement plays just as big a role in creating balance, which is what drew me to Pilates. I love how it builds strength, improves mobility, and helps people feel more connected to their bodies. For me, combining nutrition and Pilates ticks both boxes, and I get to be creative, meet new people, and - most importantly - empower others to take charge of their own health.

Along with fellow Nutritionist Hayley Davies and naturopath Bridget Love, you offer a holistic approach to women’s health and wellness at Healthy Her Studio. What can someone expect from a visit to the studio?

At Healthy Her Studio, we take a holistic approach to women’s health, supporting everything from gut health and hormones, to nutrition and movement. Someone might visit us if they’re dealing with hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, fatigue, or simply wanting to feel their best through a more balanced lifestyle.

Hayley, Bridget and I all share a food-first philosophy, believing that nourishing the body with the right foods is the foundation of good health. During a consult, we take the time to really listen and understand each person’s unique needs, and look at everything from diet and lifestyle, to stress and movement. We create personalised, realistic plans that focus on using whole foods to support wellbeing. Our goal is to empower women with the knowledge and tools to feel strong, energised and in tune with their bodies.

What are some of your own wellbeing habits?

Looking after my own wellbeing is really important to me, and I try to keep things simple and sustainable. Nourishing my body with whole, nutrient-dense food is a big one. I follow a food-first approach, and focus on meals that give me energy.

Movement is another non-negotiable, whether it’s Pilates or just getting outside for some fresh air and a walk. I love combining exercise with catching up with friends, and some of my favourites are coffee walks, playing tennis, or getting in a good sweaty hike up the Zig Zag Track at Cataract Gorge.

Prioritising rest - making time for quality sleep, slowing down when I need to, and taking time to recharge - is something I’ve learned to be more mindful of, too. One of my favourite ways to unwind is simply enjoying a quiet moment with a matcha latte. It’s all about balance, and tuning into what my body needs.

What does a day in your life look like?

(image: Instagram)

Mornings usually start with some kind of movement - Pilates or a walk, followed by coffee (I love my morning coffee or matcha). A nourishing breakfast to keep me feeling energised for the day ahead is a must.

Work-wise, no two days are the same! Some days, I’m in consults with nutrition clients, creating personalised plans, while other days, you’ll find me in the studio teaching Pilates. When I’m not there, I’m at a cosy little naturopathic clinic in town, or working on recipes, resources and content to help educate and empower women in their health.

I always try to get outside in the afternoon for a little reset, even if it’s just pottering around in my veggie garden, or collecting eggs from my girls (my chickens).

Evenings are all about winding down, cooking a wholesome meal, spending time with my partner, and watching something lighthearted to switch off. I’ve learned that balance is everything, so I try to listen to what my body needs each day and go with the flow!

What are three must-dos for every visitor to your part of lutruwita/Tasmania?

I’m a foodie, so there are no surprises here! If you’re in Launceston on a Saturday morning, the Harvest Market is a must. It’s the best way to experience Tassie’s fresh produce, meet local growers, and grab breakfast and a coffee. If you’re looking for a delicious brekkie, I highly recommend the Wanderlust food van. And you have to try the potato rösti burger!

There are so many great wineries to choose from, but Marions Vineyard is one of my favourites. It’s super cosy, the view never gets old, and they do a fantastic platter. Oh, and the wine is incredible!

And, while it’s a bit of a drive from Launceston, a visit to the Floating Sauna Lake Derby is so worth it. The sauna sits right on the edge of the lake, so you can jump straight into the water. The view is unreal, and the cold plunge makes for some hilarious memories for friends. Bonus points if you go in the cooler months - it’s next level!

Where are your favourite local haunts for nourishing eats and drinks?

LeKoh is a cute and cosy café in George Street. The chef, Jeremy, is so talented, and regularly updates the menu with a focus on local, seasonal produce. Right now, I’m obsessed with the Taiwanese pancake. Oh, and they do the best matcha in town!

Boathouse Coffee is the perfect coffee stop before or after a walk along the Seaport, and also where you’ll find the friendliest early morning crew.

Where do you love to get away to for a Tasmanian staycation?

For the ultimate switch-off, I love camping right on the beach at the Bay of Fires. Waking up to the sound of waves, making a coffee over the camp cooker, and spending the day by the water - it’s pure bliss.
