Climb Aboard These Cosy Bus Stays Around Tasmania

When you’ve exhausted every chic coastal shack that Tassie has to offer, take the road less travelled and sleep in a bus for your next getaway. Permanently parked in picturesque spots across the state, you can’t get more cosy than in a converted people-mover when it comes to time out in the Tasmanian wilderness.

HUNTINGDON TIER FOREST RETREAT

If you want to get away – as in really get away – from it all, you can’t get much more serenity than that offered by Huntingdon Tier Forest Retreat. This converted school bus is perched atop a cliff in the Southern Midlands region of Tassie, and though it’s less than an hour’s drive north out of Hobart, it feels seriously secluded. You’ll be treated to sweeping views of the valley below whether you’re in the comfy bed, indoor lounge area, wood-fired hot tub or the private meditation cave below the bus. With a little kitchen stocked with essentials and a cosy wood fire, it’s the perfect spot to escape with your other half, or even better - solo.

THE BUS HOME

Beloved Airbnb The Bus Home is situated in the stunning Tamar Valley region in Hillwood, around half an hour north of Launceston. Parked on a hilltop, the 1985 Volvo bendy bus has been lovingly and sustainably restored to sleep a small family with its king bed (and bunk beds for kids), living area, library of books, guitar for strumming, and toasty wood fire. Enjoy stunning views of the Tamar River from your snug spot inside the bus, or sprawled out on a picnic rug in the warmer months.

BICHENO BUS RETREAT

Climb aboard this 1974 Bedford bus which – after a long journey as a school bus in Victoria and a motorhome in Queensland – is now permanently parked in the east coast Tasmanian town of Bicheno. Tucked into bushland behind the owner’s house, Bicheno Bus Retreat is a private off-grid sanctuary that boasts a comfy queen bed, single bed, and fully-functioning kitchen for you to cook up a feast for enjoying al fresco under the stars. During summer, it’s the perfect spot to chill after a dip at the nearby beach or Douglas-Apsley swimming hole, thanks to its outdoor shower and barbecue.

HENRY THE BUS

Hop onto Henry the bus and you’ll see the keys are in the ignition, but this vintage bad boy isn’t going anywhere! Located in Deviot on the west side of the Tamar River, Henry features a queen bed and beautiful water views, and shares more than two acres with other vintage caravans and tiny short stays dotted around the Hearts Haven property. It’s perfect if you’re planning a big group trip and just want to rent out the whole lot, or if you’re a social kind of traveller who likes to chat over a coffee in the communal cook house.
