Get Your Caffeine Hit On Hobart’s Eastern Shore

By Josie Rozenberg-Clarke

Not to be outdone by its over-the-bridge counterpart, Hobart’s Eastern Shore is becoming quite the foodie destination. When it comes to an AM caffeine hit, east-siders have plenty of options, with new specialty coffee spots popping up all over. From Rosny to Seven Mile Beach, here are the best places to grab a cup of the good stuff on the east side of the Derwent.

AUDREY

With two locations on the Eastern Shore, Audrey is clearly a firm favourite with folks this side of the Derwent. Audrey is big on sustainability (they serve takeaways in returnable compostable cups), friendliness and of, course, good coffee. Serving up your usual flat whites alongside specialities like batch brew and pourover, even the biggest caffeine snobs will find their poison here.

BAXTER COFFEE

When the shopping mall just won’t cut it for your coffee craving, Baxter is a must. Tucked up a side street opposite the Eastlands shopping complex, Baxter is a hole-in-the-wall favourite with locals who are after a decent drop (and a housemade treat).

Monday-Friday, 6.30am-2.30pm

Saturday, 7.30-12pm

LITTLE FIRE

Hobart caffeine fiends will be pleased to know that Moonah’s popular District B coffee shop has a sister café on the Eastern Shore. Drop into Little Fire to grab a specialty coffee and a brioche brekkie bun, then head out for a stroll around picturesque Kangaroo Bay.

Monday-Friday, 8.30am-2pm

Saturday, 8am-11.30am

TIDAL COFFEE

The relatively new Tidal is cleverly housed in a shipping container right next to the Westlands Nursery in the popular coastal enclave of Seven Mile Beach. Pouring specialty coffee and serving up baked treats from two of Hobart’s best – Pigeon Whole and Six Russell Bakes – drop in here before a stroll on the sand, or a frisbee session at the nearby newly-opened Hobart Disc Golf Club

THE TOW BAR

If you’ve got zero time to sit down for a coffee, handy little pop-up The Tow Bar has you sorted. This adorable little van is currently posted up in Cambridge, slinging locally-roasted Zimmah coffee to go for all the perennially late and perpetually caffeine-addicted people of the Eastern Shore.

89 Cambridge Park Drive, Cambridge

Monday-Thursday, from 7.30am

MARLA SINGER

While it may be the perfect place to sit down for a long and indulgent brunch, Bellerive eatery Marla Singer also prides itself on serving up some of the Eastern Shore’s best specialty coffee, and you’ll see plenty of locals dropping in for takeaways. The team keeps the treat cabinet well-stocked with everything from crullers to melting moments, making it almost impossible to leave without some kind of carby goodness.

ANGIE SUE

If you’re after coffee with a view, Angie Sue in Lauderdale fits the bill. This dog-friendly café has a large courtyard, water views across Ralphs Bay, a big brunch menu and - naturally - great coffee. It’s a must-stop if you’re headed off for a beach day at nearby Cremorne, Clifton Beach or Opossum Bay.
