To Market, To Market - Tasmania’s Best Markets Shopping

By Josie Rozenberg-Clarke

If you’re looking to shop local, head out to a Tassie market this weekend. From farmers’ markets stocked with the best produce to village fairs filled with handmade and vintage wares, you’re guaranteed to find a treasure or two at our top picks.

SALAMANCA MARKET

It’s impossible to make a list of Tasmania’s best markets and not put Salamanca Market at the top. A Hobart institution now in its 53rd year, it runs every Saturday from 8am, and has more than 300 stalls from local makers and producers. Pick up anything from Tassie-made ugg boots to goats milk soap to handmade toys and incredible local art. Hot tip: go early, because by 10am the huge crowds make browsing an extreme sport.

FARM GATE MARKET

Every Sunday, locals flock to this CBD farmers’ market to stock up on all the essentials – peanut butter, homemade sauces, locally-grown produce, spirits, bread, flowers, juice, meat and sourdough crumpets. If you see huge lines for cookies, organic cheese and seasonal faves like raspberries and cherries, it’s because Hobart folks know that Farm Gate has the best of the best.

HARVEST MARKET

Launceston’s answer to Farm Gate is held every Saturday, and while you’ll actually see some of the same producers who frequent Farm Gate, there’s also a lot of specifically northern stuff to be found at Harvest – like 41° South sustainable salmon, big bunches of Heathermoor peonies, and meat from Mount Gnomon Farm.

EVANDALE MARKET

Each week the charming midlands village of Evandale is taken over by Tassie’s biggest and longest-running Sunday market. Taking up all of Falls Park, this enormous market has incredible antiques, second-hand books and toys, vintage records, handmade goodies, great food stalls and live music. It’s a genuine challenge to leave Evandale Market empty-handed – worth the 20c entry fee.

TASMANIAN MADE MARKET

There’s plenty of talented craftspeople in Tasmania, and this massive indoor market is all about them. With up to 145 stallholders, several Tasmanian Made Market events are held each year in Hobart and Launceston, including Easter, winter, spring and Christmas editions. You’ll see wares from woodworkers, quilters, lolly makers, silversmiths, distillers, bakers, knitters and more. Basically, if you can create it with your hands, you can buy it at this market.

HOBART TWILIGHT MARKET

Make like a local and chuck on a puffer jacket for the popular Hobart Twilight Market, held at two different locations (Brooke Street Pier and Sandy Bay’s Long Beach) on Friday evenings throughout the year. Brave the crisp Tassie evening air to enjoy live music and food stalls, and shop wares by local artisans.
